Preparing Your Home’s Plumbing for the Fall and Winter
Below are cost saving, fall and winter preparatory tips to do now to prevent many common plumbing issues.
Prepare your pipes for freezing temperatures
It is highly recommended to prepare your pipes for freezing temperatures as fall gets underway. When the temperature drops below freezing there is the potential for your pipes to burst, which can produce quite a mess and be expensive to fix.
To protect against this, be sure to check for any areas of your home that have uninsulated pipes. Common areas that are not insulated include: the outer walls, the garage, and the cellar. You can purchase a plumbing insulation kit from most hardware stores, and it is fairly easy to install on your home.
Make sure your water heater is running properly
Check to make certain your water heater is properly functioning, as it is important for it to work adequately during the fall and winter. Now is a good time to check that no repairs are needed and that the sacrificial anode rod is working correctly.
You can inspect your heater yourself if you have the experience and knowledge or hire one of our professional master plumbers.
Set your water heater temperature at no greater than 120 F to prevent energy waste and scalding.

Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home
Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home
As the fall season takes hold, many people stay home increasing meal preparation and water use. Following just a few tips can help you avoid an unexpectedly high water bill.
- Rinse any vegetables or fruits in a pan filled with water rather than rinsing them under running water. When your sink is running, 4 gallons of water are used per minute.
- Put food scraps in the composting bin or garbage rather than disposing down your garbage disposal.
- Be sure to only run your dishwasher when it is totally full. Dishwashers can use up to 12 gallons of water, and running it at less than full capacity will also waste energy.
- Like your dishwasher, be sure to only run your washer and dryer when they are also at full capacity to reduce the cost of both energy and water.
- When you are washing dishes, try to fill up one sink basin with soapy water for soaking your dishes, and fill up the second basin to about ½ capacity for rinsing your dishes. Try to avoid allowing water to run continuously when washing your dishes.
- Installing water efficient shower heads, toilets, and faucets is a great investment that can save you substantially on your annual water bill.
Putman & Sons Plumbing has extensive experience with installing water efficient plumbing systems. If you are interested in scheduling an installation or if you have any questions at all, contact Putman & Sons Plumbing today.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Residential Plumber
When your home’s plumbing systems are in need of repair, you may feel a bit overwhelmed in just how many options you have for getting the work done. In the area of plumbing, it is especially important to choose the best residential plumber from the beginning, providing you with the highest quality work, the very first time. The following three elements must be considered in your search for a plumber to guarantee your satisfaction.
- Experience
The most important factor in a plumber’s ability to handle a variety of tasks is their experience in the field. A seasoned plumber has the expertise to troubleshoot problems quickly and rectify the situation in the most appropriate, cost effective manner.
- Licensing
Similar to other areas of labor, plumbers must receive licensing to work in the United States. You should seek work from Licensed Master Plumbers only, who have demonstrated absolute proficiency. In the state of Michigan, a plumber must have 4,000 hours working as a journey plumber in the two years prior to examination and subsequently pass a grueling test on all facets of the job.
- 24/7 Response
Emergencies are unpredictable and occur at the worst of times. Be sure to seek a company which offers 24/7 response to its customers. This round the clock service demonstrates the dedication and resources needed to handle any problem.
The above are just a few of the things to look for when searching for a residential plumber.
